Hemp farming is experiencing normal growing pains. We can see the industry’s maturation in the evolution of the legal, commercial and business issues hemp farmers and processors are grappling with. Instead of struggling with regulatory restrictions, hemp producers are confronting issues that could beset any infant industry.
I’m often asked to comment on whether or not cannabis will ever truly attain the status of a commodity. While the answer has generally been yes, we have a ways to go.

The Mosbys and Riders of Eldorado, Ill., took the 3 acres of hemp they harvested in 2019 down to 2 acres in 2020, planting less than half the crop they did the prior year. They say more hemp plants don’t mean more profit in a market where they lost more money than they made in 2019.

Vegetable growers across the U.S. weren’t among the traditional farmers heavily diversifying into hemp production in 2020.
According to a survey of 437 farmers by trade journal American Vegetable Grower, 77% said they had no intention of planting the crop this year. Just 4% of farmers said they planned to grow hemp while 19% indicated they were considering it.

U.S. commodities trading platform PanXchange said it will begin to track prices for hemp grain and stalk for the USA market, noting it expects the feed and food seed markets to evolve into traditional cash crops for U.S. farmers, much like corn, wheat, and soy. Very little grain is grown in the USA, primarily in the northern states of Washington, Montana and North Dakota. Hemp is grown for its stalks only in a few isolated spots around the country.
PanXchange will begin issuing the first and only US benchmark prices for Hemp Grain and True Hemp beginning with its October 28th monthly report.
